Hello again,
We were privileged to have a very enjoyable road race on Saturday to start off our road race season. Our colleagues in Dublin City Council put in a lot of effort to make this a very successful race. Our thanks to Jim Kelly, John O’Reilly, Kevin O’Connell and colleagues at Dublin City Council. Click on "read more"…
The turnout was rather low but we know that various regular runners were further afield in Connemara and Berlin. Nevertheless, there were good quality fields in each race.
Niall Mathews was notable for his loyalty – although he was due to go to Galway for the Connemara Marathon and despite not being in full health, he came along to jog around the course anyway.
The weather was quite chilly with a bit of wind but it was sunny, so it wasn’t too bad – unless you were a spectator.
Paul Fleming (Irish Dairy Board) was chasing his third successive victory in this race and he duly claimed the prize in beating Vincent O’Sullivan of Geary Education. David Byrne (KIT) was third.
In the women’s race, Lorraine Manning (Garda) managed to deprive Mary Hanley (Dept of Enterprise and Employment) of a third successive victory. Sheila Coyle (Dept of Social and Family Affairs) was third.
Before the prize giving afterwards, we had the usual quiz with prizes of vouchers for golf, leisure centres, swimming and car parking. The race prizes were presented by Pat Hooper, former Irish Olympian and current stalwart of the local Raheny Shamrock club. There was a full range of team prizes as well as spot prizes picked at random for which winners had to be present.

In addition to the race prizes, the prizes for the winter cross-country league 2007-2008 were presented. The prizewinners here were:

Ronan Kearns
Mark Leacy
Stan Woods
Derek Quinn
David Gargan

Eoin Gannon
Ken Newman
Sean Slattery
Tommy Armstrong
Nick Corish
Patrick Rice
Tony Shea
Nuala Reilly
Lorraine Manning

So, it is fair to say that a large proportion of those present took home at least one prize.
Our next race is the slightly more arduous Kepak 8 mile road race at Clonee on Saturday 19 April 2008 at 2.30pm.
Bye for now.
