Standards

The BHAA standard is like a golf handicap and gives a runner a target time to aim for at races.

Your standard is assigned automatically after your first BHAA race. As an example in a 5km race, if a runner ran 20min they would be assigned to the standard 10 group.
Once you have a standard there is a certain time you need to achieve at the next race to stay in that standard. If you run quicker than expected, your standard is lowered. If you run slower than expected your standard increases. Your standard can only change by plus or minus one.
Let’s do an example. After a 5km race our runner is standard 10, the next race is a 5miler so their target time to stay as a standard 10 is between 32mins 15seconds and 33m 14seconds. If they run 32mins, the runner is dropped to standard 9, if they run say 37mins they are dropped to standard 11.

How does my standard effect the league?
We assign runners to different league divisions based on the their standard. Since a runners standard can change over the course of a league season we use a average standard to ensure a runner ends up in the correct final division.

How does my standard effect my team?
For each team of three runners, we sum the standard of the runners to determine which class the team is assigned. There are 4 class A,B,C,D.

I think my standard is wrong?
From time to time a runner might take a break from racing and come back to an unrealistic standard. Just contact one of the BHAA committee members and we can arrange for a standard to be manually adjusted.
