<dc:subject>Race Repots </dc:subject>

BHAA & SDCC delighted with the first race of 2010

Business Houses Athletic Association (BHAA) & South Dublin County Council (SDCC) were delighted to host the first race on the 2010 BHAA race calendar.

Despite having had to be rescheduled from last Saturday due to adverse weather conditions, and the provincial Leinster cross country races on the following day, there was a fantastic turn out in both the ladies and the men’s races.

Mick McCarten and his team did a phenomenal job, ensuring all aspects of the race were well catered for. Speaking of catering, suffice it to say Mick must have been busy baking based on the amount of brack following the race! The course was measured accurately, well marked and stewarded. It proved challenging in parts, with hills and water in abundance. The yellow BHAA jeep marked the finish line, which many were very glad to see. SDCC Mayor Mick Duff presented some very useful prizes, 72 in all, to the prize winners.

The ladies 2 mile race was won in an impressive time by F Mahon (Primary Teacher) in a time of 12:05, followed closely by Kate O’Neill (Instant Comms) in a time of 12:13, with one of the competing twins Aoife Brady (Standard Life) third home in 12:34

There were also prizes for the veteran ladies:

And there were only 2 ladies teams this time round with Revenue taking the honours, with Irish Life & Permanent hot on their heels to take second place.

<dc:subject>General News</dc:subject>

Welcome to the BHAA 2010 season and we are looking forward to another great series of races this year. We would like to inform you of some rule and process changes for the 2010 season.

Declared Sector Teams
Up to now the BHAA committee has placed runners into sector teams, when they have had no chance of forming a team within their company. This system has been difficult to manage since it was unclear to runners who was on their team on a given day, and for committee to limit the size of the teams and predict who would turn up to run for a given sector team.

In order to ensure more clarity is brought to the sector teams area, we will introduce a "declared sector team" for all races this year. The basic idea is that a group of runners, all of whom work for different companies in the same sector, will declare that they will run as a team for the year.

Company and Sectors
1. A list of industry sectors will be maintained by the BHAA committee.
2. Each company will be registered within one sector.
3. Membership of the team is fixed for the BHAA one year season.

Company Team
4. Runners employed by a specific company can only join the company team if one exists.
5. There is no maximum limit to the number of runners on a company team.

Sector Team
6. If a runner cannot form a company team of at least 3 runners, then they are allowed to form a team with a minimum of three members and maximum six members with other runners from the same sector.

Team Registration
7. Each team will have a nominated contact person.
8. By default any runner will NOT be registered with any team by the committee.
9. It is up to the runner to find their company team or a section team, via the website, forum or at races.
10. The BHAA committee can recommend to groups of runners that they should form a sector team, but the application must come from the teams.

This do not effect the setup of company teams (runners will be automatically assigned), but we would like to see a person step forward from each company team to act as a liason with the BHAA committee. In the coming days we will contact all runners without a company teams, and outline how they can use this website to identify other runners in their sector.

Rule Change for 2010
- The wearing of headphones is forbidden at all BHAA events.
This is to ensure that all runners can hear the instructions from stewards and are fully aware of other runners on the course.

BHAA Membership Cards
We will start issuing membership cards in February. The card will allow members to access discounts in various shops and services.

We look forward to seeing you all at some stage in 2010,
Yours in sport,
The BHAA Committee

The new and updated BHAA members/results website has been launched. Its a complete re-write of the old system and has a number of new features. Click on "read more"...

A quick introduction of main features of the new site:
The home page
Lists the current and upcoming races.
Runner Search - Type the first three letters of an active members surname and you'll get a list of matching names. Select a member from the list and you'll be directed to their results page.

Runner Results Page
Has a chart of the standard and pace per km times for each race.
RacePixs365 - We have a direct link enabled to RacePixs365 with the bib number used by the runner for each event. It should cut out the hassel of "search by bib number". A big thanks to Darren Spring for his help with this.

Event/Race Results
The individual results for all races
A new chart with the total number of runners in each event
The team results are available for some races.

Leagues
The winter and summer league tables will be available online. Thanks to Brendan McLoughlin for his SQL work here.

Standards
We have a table of standard times for various distances that a member can use to predict their standard.
(It should be easy to add a standard calculator to this page).

Teams/Sectors
We have a list of the sectors and the companies/teams registered within each sector.
Each company has a individual page, with options to display the company logo, website and contact person for that company/team.
Each registered team has a specific page.
Search for a team by name.

Membership Form
We have a simple membership form that should help to register new members, the user gets an email to print, sign and bring to the next race. Payment can be made online via paypal. (Next step is a day-members pre-registration form).

Please let us know your comments via the forum or email

Winter leagues starts next week in the Teachers Cross Country in Castleknock in October until NUI & AIB in March.

This gives runners some great motivation to compete during the cold winter months with runners of their own ability and watch as good training and hard work can push them to new heights.

The BHAA individual league is all about you the individual runner.

- The concept of the Individual League is to reward consistent high performance of the most regular race attendees within a given grade structure.

- It is hoped it will give another opportunity for athletes to compete for places even if they are not members of the usual winning teams.

- In order to qualify for the Individual League athletes must be members of the BHAA during the league

- The best finishing person of each Division gets 10 points. The second best finishing person of each Division gets 9.9 points.... and so on to the last finishing person in each “Division” in that race.

- All finishing members of the BHAA should get some points based on their finishing position within their Division.

- Over the course of the League each members’ total points from all races are added to determine the overall winner of each division.

- You can miss TWO races over the league

- Race Promoters/Organizers’ will receive 10 points for their own race (as they won’t be racing themselves).

- Full details on www.bhaa.ie or you can email info@bhaa.ie

Castleknock Gate & Mountjoy R/A in the Phoenix Park are now closed until Sun 29th Nov approx. • This is to upgrade the roundabout at Mountjoy Cross. All commuter traffic is advised to take a route around the park. • Castleknock, the N3/Navan Rd and Chapelizod are likely to be very heavy as a result, so give yourself at least 30 minutes extra in the first few days as people get used to the temporary layout. • Diversions at the Castleknock Gate will direct you in the Ashtown Gate, down Old Lamp Rd to the Phoenix Monument and out the Main Gate.
•

Coming from the Parkgate St entrance you will be diverted out the Cabra Gate or the Knockmaroon Gate so you are better off going around the park instead.

Wednesday, 12 August, saw the start of the BHAA track races with the IL&P 3000 metres. 90 plus competitors turned up on a balmy summer evening to enjoy a thrilling night of racing. The races were handicapped based on athletes current standards with each standard starting 14 seconds apart. Prizes were presented to the first 6 finishers in each race. Some competitors were quietly surprised at how much their standard has improved over the season. The challenge to the higher standards in each race was to catch the other competitors over the 7 & ½ laps.

First race was for standards 3-8, Kevin Mulligan (10.02) and Donal Iremonger (10.04) held their starting positions until close to the end when Paul O’Connell powered home in 8.59 mins, a performance he repeated in 10 mile race in Phoenix Park on Sat to secure 5th position. The second race (standards 9-12) was a tightly fought affair, Derek Furniss’s finishing time of 9.44 earned him 2nd place to Karl Walsh (10.08) with Sean Healy (9.56) finishing closely in 3rd position. Competition was again intense in race 3 (standards 13-15) with only seconds separating the leading 6. Niall McGeorge (11.04) was the victor on this occasion, followed hot on the heels by Brendan Fox(11.10) and Dave Sheehan (11.11). Sheelagh Jones came in strongly in 4th position in a time of 11.42. Standards 16-19 took part in race 4 and this was probably the most hotly contested race of the night with Mark Foley (11.49) winning by the narrowest of margins over John McCooey (11.51) in 2nd place and Keith Hannon (11.56) in 3rd place. The final race of the evening saw Tommy Armstong take the honours for the BHAA runners and Cormac Fitzpatrick led the non–BHAA runners in a fantastic time of 9:20, with Paul Duffy in quick succession in a time of 9.30 and Colin Bolger in 3rd position (9.56).

Susan Walsh as always did a superb job on race commentary. Declan Horgan ensured a prompt start for each standard. Luckily he knew his 14 times tables! There was no shortage of stewards at the finish thanks to the help from IL&P and the BHAA.

With only 3 races left in the individual summer league, leading positions are still all to play for so make sure you get out to the next 3 races. The next race is on August 26th in Irishtown Stadium and will be hosted by Zurich
